Know the chapters

John 2–4 is full of firsts: Jesus turns water into wine at a wedding, clears the moneychangers out of the temple because it is His Father’s house, teaches Nicodemus at night that we must be born of water and of the Spirit, and tells us why He came: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son” (John 3:16).

Then comes the woman at the well (John 4:5–42). Jesus was tired from walking and sat by Jacob’s well. A woman from Samaria came to get water, and Jesus asked her for a drink. She was surprised, because many Jews would not even talk to Samaritans (John 4:9). Jesus talked to her kindly and offered her “living water”: His gospel and His love, which fill us up forever instead of running out. She left her water jar and ran to tell her town, and many came to see Jesus.

Your one tiny truth for today: Jesus loves everyone. Some people wouldn’t talk to this woman, but Jesus did. Three-year-olds understand water they can see and pour, so let the water do the teaching: water helps us for a little while; Jesus’s love never runs out. Say the tiny truth again and again, pointing to every child: “Jesus loves you!”

Show Jesus with a picture and read His words yourself; no child plays Jesus. If you teach on fast Sunday, keep the water for pouring and pretending, not drinking. The temple and baptism parts of these chapters are simple extras.

Only have 5 minutes?

Bring a cup and a small water bottle if you can (or skip them and use the no-supplies versions). Tell the well story with your phone or tablet scenes (everyone walks, peeks down the well and pulls up the bucket), say “God so loved the world” with a big hug and a big circle, play Love Pass around the circle, and end by naming each child: “Jesus loves you.”

What to bring6 items

Before class

  1. Put the picture of Jesus inside the small box or gift bag and close it.
  2. Fill the water bottle about halfway and keep the cup and towel next to your chair.
  3. Pick a spot on the floor to be “the well” (a rug, a chair, or a circle of tape).
  4. Open this lesson in Teach Mode so the story pictures and the Sound Board splash are ready.

If your class is wild

  • Crying at the door? Let the parent stay a few minutes, and give the child a job: “Will you hold my gift box?” If tears keep going, a parent can sit in the back.
  • Potty breaks: have another grown-up (a class helper or a parent) take the child; never be alone out of sight with a child. Keep going with everyone else.
  • Water is magic for three-year-olds, and messy. Only the teacher pours; the children watch and say “Glug, glug!” Keep a towel nearby.
  • Fast Sunday? Some little ones will be hungry or grumpy. Skip snacks and drinks, keep the lesson moving, and give lots of cozy, quiet cuddle-your-knees moments.
  • Use “Glug, glug!” as your call-back: when you say it, everyone sits and pretends to drink from a cup. It gathers the class fast.

1. Hook

Glug, Glug!

2 min

Real water being poured grabs every eye and gets them thinking about thirst and wells.

  1. Sit on the floor with the children. Hold up the empty cup. Say: “My cup is empty! What should I put in it?”
  2. Slowly pour water into the cup. Everyone says, “Glug, glug, glug!”
  3. Ask: “What do we need water for?” Act out their answers: drinking, baths, washing hands, flowers.
  4. SAY“When we’re thirsty, water helps. Today Jesus meets a woman who came to get water, and He shows her how much He loves her.”
🌪️ Only you hold the water. If little hands reach, say, “Water watchers keep hands on knees!”

Instead of: A clear plastic cup and a small bottle of water (for pouring, not drinking)

Pretend Cup

  1. Hold up an invisible cup. Say: “My cup is empty! Let’s fill it.” Tap the splash on the Sound Board.
  2. Everyone pretends to fill a cup and drink it: “Glug, glug, glug! Ahhh!”
  3. Ask: “What do we need water for?” Act out their answers: baths, washing hands, flowers.
  4. SAY“Today Jesus meets a woman who came to get water, and He shows her how much He loves her.”

2. Story

Story: The Woman at the Well

Children walk, peek, carry and pull their way through the story and end by telling friends, “Jesus loves you!”

  1. SAY“Everybody stand up. We’re going on a long walk with Jesus!”
  2. Show each scene on your phone or tablet and read the one or two sentences. Hold up the picture of Jesus when He sits by the well.
  3. Do each action together. Go slowly and make it big.
  4. Tap the splash and heartbeat sounds as you go.
  5. In the last scene, point to each child and say, “Jesus loves you!” End by saying together: “Jesus loves everyone!”

3. Wiggle break

Walk to the Well

2 min

Burns energy by acting out the trip to the well with bigger and sillier moves.

  1. SAY“Let’s go get water at the well!”
  2. Walk in place, then march up a hill, tiptoe past sleeping sheep, and hop over rocks.
  3. At the well, drop the bucket (“Splash!”), pull it up (“Pull, pull, pull!”) and carry the jar on your head very carefully.
  4. End by sitting down and drinking a pretend cup: “Glug, glug, ahhh!”
🌪️ If they get too wild, make the water jar “very full”: everyone walks super slowly so it won’t spill.

4. Object lesson

The Best Gift

Opening a gift with Jesus’s picture inside shows that Heavenly Father gave us Jesus because He loves us.

  1. Hold up the gift. Give it a little shake. Say: “Who likes presents? Me too! What could be inside?”
  2. Let each child give it one gentle shake or tap.
  3. Count together, “One… two… three!” and open it slowly. Pull out the picture of Jesus.
  4. SAY“Heavenly Father loves us so much, He gave us Jesus! Jesus loves everyone. Jesus loves you!”
  5. Let each child wave hello to Jesus’s picture.

No supplies? Do this instead

Instead of: A picture of Jesus (from the Gospel Library app printed out, a Friend magazine, or the meetinghouse library), A small box or gift bag with the picture of Jesus inside (wrap it in any paper if you like)

The Invisible Gift

  1. Pretend to pick up a great big gift. “Oof, it’s heavy!” Pass it around the circle, and everyone gives it a shake.
  2. Count together, “One… two… three!” and open it with big, slow hands.
  3. SAY“Guess what’s inside? It’s the best gift ever. It’s Jesus!” Everyone makes a heart with their hands.
  4. SAY“Heavenly Father loves us so much, He gave us Jesus! Jesus loves everyone. Jesus loves you!”

5. Scripture

Key Words: “For God So Loved the World”

Six Bible words with a hug and a big circle help the children remember that Heavenly Father loves everyone.

  1. Hold up your scriptures. Say: “These words are in the Bible. They tell us why Heavenly Father sent Jesus.”
  2. Say it slowly with the motions: “For God” (point up) “so loved” (big hug) “the world” (giant circle arms).
  3. Say it together three ways: a whisper, a happy loud voice, and a slow sleepy voice.
  4. SAY“Heavenly Father loves the whole world. Jesus loves everyone, and that means you!”

6. Game

Love Pass

Every child hears their own name with “Jesus loves you,” so the tiny truth becomes personal.

  1. Sit in a circle. Open Hot Potato on your phone or tablet.
  2. Pass the beanbag (or sock) around the circle while the music plays.
  3. When it buzzes, whoever is holding it stands up. Everyone points and says, “Jesus loves (child’s name)!” The child gets a big cheer.
  4. Play until every child has had a turn. You can quietly make sure everyone gets one.

Pass the Squeeze

  1. Sit in a circle and hold hands. Open Hot Potato on your phone or tablet.
  2. Pass a gentle hand squeeze around the circle while the music plays.
  3. When it buzzes, whoever just got the squeeze stands up. Everyone points and says, “Jesus loves (child’s name)!”
  4. Play until every child has had a turn.

Sing: “Jesus Said Love Everyone”

A short, simple song puts the tiny truth to music.

  1. SAY“Jesus loves everyone. He wants us to love everyone too!”
  2. Sing “Jesus Said Love Everyone” (Children’s Songbook, 61). Hug yourself on “love” and make a big circle on “everyone.”
  3. Sing it one more time very softly.

8. Talk it over

  1. SAY“Let’s find out who Jesus loves!”
  2. Ask the questions one at a time. Everyone answers with a big nod or points. Cheer every time: “Yes! Jesus loves everyone!”

9. Testimony

Quiet Well

A calm, loving moment where the teacher shares a simple testimony of Jesus’s love.

  1. SAY“Let’s sit very quietly, like the cool, still water at the bottom of the well. Fold your arms.”
  2. In a soft voice, say: “Heavenly Father loves us so much, He gave us Jesus. Jesus loves everyone. I know He loves you.”
  3. Name each child: “Ava, Jesus loves you. Leo, Jesus loves you.” (Use your own class names.)
  4. Say a short closing prayer, or help a child fold their arms while you say it.

Every time you wash your hands or take a bath this week, say to someone in your family, “Jesus loves you!”

Text the parents

Today in Sunbeams we learned that Jesus was kind to a woman at a well when others wouldn’t talk to her. Our tiny truth: Jesus loves everyone. Ask your child: “What did the woman come to get?” (Water!) Then take turns telling each person in your family, “Jesus loves you.”

  1. Show a picture of a temple (or make a pointy roof with your hands). Say: “The temple is Heavenly Father’s house.”
  2. SAY“Jesus wanted people to be reverent in Heavenly Father’s house” (John 2:13–16).
  3. Practice reverent walking: tiptoe, arms folded, whisper voices. Say: “Our church is a special place too. We can be reverent here.”

👶 A Brand-New Start · 2 min

  1. Rock a baby doll or a rolled-up blanket. Say: “A new baby has a brand-new start!”
  2. SAY“Jesus taught that when we are baptized and get the Holy Ghost, it’s like a brand-new start too” (John 3:5). “When you are eight, you can be baptized!”
  3. Everyone holds up eight fingers with a little help.

🌱 Water for a Thirsty Plant · 2 min

  1. If your room has a plant, or you bring one, let children take turns pouring a tiny splash of water on it.
  2. SAY“Plants need water to grow. We need Jesus to grow too. His love fills us up and never runs out” (John 4:14).
  3. Everyone grows from a tiny seed (crouch) into a tall plant (stretch) while you say the tiny truth.
