Know the chapters

This is the February fast-Sunday lesson from Appendix B of the 2027 manual, taught instead of the regular Come, Follow Me lesson. Its message: Heavenly Father wants us to pray to Him anytime and anywhere, He hears and answers us, and Jesus prayed and showed us how. Prayer and fasting go together; grown-ups who fast today are praying extra. Sunbeams are too young to fast, and some may just be hungry, so skip food rewards and use cheers and high-fives instead.

The story is Enos (Enos 1:1–17). Enos grew up hearing his father, Jacob, teach about Jesus Christ. One day while hunting in the forest, he remembered those words, knelt down, and prayed all day long and into the night. The Lord answered him, told him his sins were forgiven, and said it was because of his faith in Christ. Then Enos prayed for his own people and even for the Lamanites, who were unkind to them. For three-year-olds, tell it simply: Enos prayed a long time, Heavenly Father heard him, and Enos felt happy inside. Then he prayed for other people too.

Jesus prayed too: early in the morning (Mark 1:35), before He fed thousands with bread and fish (Matthew 14:19), in the Garden of Gethsemane (Luke 22:41), and when He blessed the Nephite children one by one and prayed for them (3 Nephi 17:21–24). Joseph Smith prayed in a grove of trees and saw Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ (Joseph Smith—History 1:13–17).

Most three-year-olds can fold their arms but don’t yet know what to say. The goal today is simple and physical: fold arms, bow head, close eyes, and say “Dear Heavenly Father… thank you for… in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.” Keep your promise simple and true: Heavenly Father always hears you and loves you.

Only have 5 minutes?

Pretend to call Grandma on your phone, then say, “To talk to Heavenly Father, I don’t need a phone. I pray!” Swipe through the Enos picture story, teach “The Lord will hear when I call” with the ear-and-mouth motions, and play Pray-Anywhere Freeze: when the music stops, call out a place (bed, dinner, car) and everyone freezes with folded arms. End by helping one child say the closing prayer. Brought nothing? Tap “I brought nothing”: use a pinky-and-thumb pretend phone and pass a pretend thank-you bubble.

Before class

  1. Draw the four prayer pictures: a waving hand (“Dear Heavenly Father”), a present (“Thank you for…”), two helping hands (“Please help…”), and a heart (“In the name of Jesus Christ, amen”). Tape them in four spots on the wall or lay them on the floor.
  2. Add your children’s names in the My Class tab so you can greet each one by name.
  3. Read the story scenes once. Practice making scene 5 (night) quiet and scene 6 happy.
  4. Open Freeze Dance on your phone or tablet once so you know where the play button is.

If your class is wild

  • Some Sunbeams cry when a parent leaves. Let the parent stay a few minutes, then invite the child to answer the toy phone in the hook.
  • Attention signal: you say “Fold your arms!” and they answer “Bow my head!” and freeze in prayer position for three seconds.
  • Folding arms is hard for little ones. Praise the try (“Look at those folded arms!”) instead of correcting eyes that peek.
  • Potty breaks: follow your ward’s policy (usually a parent or the second adult takes the child). Two adults stay with the children, so never leave the class alone.
  • It’s fast Sunday: don’t hand out food rewards. If a child is hungry and grumpy, give them a helper job (pushing play on Freeze Dance) and tell their parent after class.

1. Hook

Ring, Ring!

A pretend phone call shows three-year-olds the difference: we need a phone to talk to Grandma, but we can talk to Heavenly Father anytime by praying.

  1. Make the phone ring: “Ring, ring!” Answer it: “Hello, Grandma! I love you! Bye-bye!”
  2. Let two or three children take a turn: “Ring, ring! Who will you call?”
  3. SAY“When I want to talk to Grandma, I need a phone. When I want to talk to Heavenly Father, I don’t need a phone at all!”
  4. Fold your arms and bow your head. Whisper: “I pray! And Heavenly Father hears me. Today we’ll hear about a boy who prayed all day long.”
🌪️ Only children on their spots get a turn with the phone. Keep turns to one quick hello each.

Pinky Phones

  1. Make a pretend phone with your thumb and pinky. Say: “Ring, ring! Hello, Grandma! I love you! Bye-bye!”
  2. Everyone makes a pinky phone. Say: “Ring, ring! Who will you call?” Let them all shout a name.
  3. SAY“When I want to talk to Grandma, I need a phone. When I want to talk to Heavenly Father, I don’t need a phone at all!”
  4. Fold your arms and bow your head. Whisper: “I pray! And Heavenly Father hears me. Today we’ll hear about a boy who prayed all day long.”

Picture Story: Enos Prayed All Day

Eight short picture scenes show a boy who prayed a long time and was heard.

  1. Sit close together on the floor. Say: “Let’s go into the forest with Enos!”
  2. Swipe through the scenes on your phone or tablet. Read the short sentences, then do the action together.
  3. Get very quiet for scene 5 (night). Then make scene 6 big and happy.
  4. After scenes 6 and 8, say together: “Heavenly Father hears me!”
🌪️ If the tiptoe hunters get too wild, turn them into sleepy deer that lie down and listen.

3. Wiggle break

Pray-Anywhere Freeze

Freezing into prayer in pretend places shows Sunbeams they can pray anywhere.

  1. Tap Freeze Dance. Everyone dances while the music plays.
  2. When the music stops, call out a place: “In bed!” (lie down), “At dinner!” (sit), “In the car!” (hold a steering wheel), “Outside!” (stand tall), “At church!” (sit still).
  3. Everyone freezes in that spot with folded arms and bowed heads. Whisper: “Heavenly Father hears you there!”
  4. Play four or five rounds.

Our Little Verse: Psalm 4:3

Ear-and-mouth motions help Sunbeams remember that the Lord hears them when they pray.

  1. Hold up your scriptures. Say: “The Bible tells us something happy. Listen!”
  2. Read Psalm 4:3 slowly: “the LORD will hear when I call unto him.” Say: “When I pray, the Lord hears me.”
  3. Teach the motions (see Key Verse) one at a time. Then say it together: “The Lord will hear when I call.”
  4. Say it three ways: a whisper, a regular voice, and a big happy voice.
  5. SAY“Jesus prayed too! He prayed early in the morning, and before He shared bread and fish.” Everyone folds arms.

Prayer Pieces

Four pictures give three-year-olds a simple map for what to say when they pray.

  1. Point to the waving hand. Say: “We start: Dear Heavenly Father.” Everyone waves.
  2. Point to the present. Say: “We say thank you.” Everyone opens a pretend present.
  3. Point to the helping hands. Say: “We ask for help.” Everyone holds out open hands.
  4. Point to the heart. Say: “We end: in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.” Everyone hugs themselves.
  5. Walk to each picture together and do the motion while you say the words.

Prayer Motions

  1. SAY“A prayer has four little pieces. Let’s do them with our hands!”
  2. “Dear Heavenly Father” = wave. “Thank you for…” = open a pretend present. “Please help…” = hold out open hands. “In the name of Jesus Christ, amen” = hug yourself.
  3. Do the four motions in order while you say the words together. Then do them faster!
  4. Show the kid screen on your phone or tablet so everyone can see the four pieces.
6. Game

Thank-You Toss

Tossing a ball and naming a blessing gives every child practice saying the “thank you” part of a prayer.

  1. Sit in a circle. Say: “When we pray, we say thank you. What can we thank Heavenly Father for?”
  2. Gently roll or toss the ball to a child. They say one thing: “Thank you for my puppy!” Help with ideas: Mommy, Daddy, food, sunshine, my bed.
  3. Everyone folds arms and says, “Thank you, Heavenly Father!” Then the child rolls the ball back to you.
  4. Keep going until everyone has had a turn or two.
🌪️ Rolling works better than tossing for three-year-olds. Roll the ball on the floor so it doesn’t fly.

Thank-You Popcorn

  1. Everyone crouches down small like a popcorn kernel.
  2. Tap a child gently on the head. They pop up tall and say one thing they’re thankful for.
  3. Everyone folds arms and says, “Thank you, Heavenly Father!” Then the popper crouches back down.
  4. Keep popping until everyone has had a turn or two.

  3. If they don’t know it yet, sing it slowly and let them do the motions.

A Little Prayer Together

Helping one child say the closing prayer, with everyone listening, makes prayer real and not scary.

  1. Lower your voice. Say: “Heavenly Father hears every one of you. He loves to hear you pray.”
  2. Share one simple sentence: “I know Heavenly Father hears me when I pray. I talk to Him every day.”
  3. Invite one child to say the closing prayer. Kneel beside them and whisper a few words at a time: “Dear Heavenly Father… thank you for… in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.”
  4. Everyone says “Amen!” together. Say: “You did it! Heavenly Father heard that.”

Every night this week, fold your arms and pray with Mom or Dad before bed. Say one new “thank you” to Heavenly Father each night.

Text the parents

Today your Sunbeam learned that they can pray to Heavenly Father anytime and anywhere, and He hears them. We heard how Enos prayed all day in the forest (Enos 1), played a pray-anywhere freeze game, and practiced the four little pieces of a prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you, please help, in the name of Jesus Christ, amen. Ask your child: “Did you know you can pray anywhere?” Then let them help say your family prayer tonight.
