Know the chapters

Isaiah prophesied about 700 years before Jesus was born. Chapters 13–14 announce the fall of proud Babylon, and in 14:12–15 Isaiah compares Babylon’s king to Lucifer, who said “I will” five times, tried to put himself above God, and was brought down. Moses 4:1–2 shows the other side of that premortal council: Satan demanded God’s honor, while the Savior said, “Father, thy will be done, and the glory be thine forever.” Chapters 24–30 and 35 look ahead to the last days: the Lord as a refuge from the storm (25:4), death swallowed up in victory (25:8, quoted by Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:54), perfect peace for those whose minds are stayed on Him (26:3), revelation that comes line upon line (28:10), and a desert that blossoms as the rose (35:1). In 22:22–23 Eliakim receives the key of the house of David and is fastened “as a nail in a sure place,” words that point to Jesus Christ (compare Revelation 3:7).

The star of the week is Isaiah 29, and your Valiants can handle it as a real piece of prophetic evidence. Isaiah saw a people who would “speak out of the ground” and whisper “out of the dust” (29:4; compare 2 Nephi 26:16), a sealed book handed to a learned man who says “I cannot; for it is sealed” (29:11), the same book given to someone “not learned” (29:12), and a “marvellous work and a wonder” (29:14). Nephi quotes and expands this prophecy in 2 Nephi 27, adding details such as three witnesses who would see the book (27:12) and the Lord’s promise, “I am able to do mine own work” (27:20).

The fulfillment is in Joseph Smith—History 1:59–65. Joseph received the plates on September 22, 1827, 199 years ago this very week, from a hill where Moroni had buried them about 1,400 years earlier. Joseph copied some of the characters, and in 1828 Martin Harris took them to Professor Charles Anthon in New York City. By Martin’s account, the professor called the characters true and wrote a certificate, then asked for it back and tore it up when he heard an angel was involved. When Martin said part of the plates was sealed, Anthon replied, “I cannot read a sealed book.” Joseph, a young farmer with little schooling, translated by the gift and power of God, and the Book of Mormon was printed in 1830. Isaiah 29:13 shows up again in the First Vision, where the Lord quoted it to describe the religions of Joseph’s day (Joseph Smith—History 1:19).

Nine- to eleven-year-olds love a mystery that actually gets solved, and they are old enough to notice the pattern: proud Lucifer falls, the proud professor misses the miracle, and a humble teenager receives the book. That is Isaiah 29:14: the wisdom of the worldly wise perishes, and God does His work anyway. Help them see that the same humble, line-upon-line learning is how they gain their own testimony of the Book of Mormon. Your 11-year-olds are getting ready for the temple and for deacon quorums and Young Women classes; the restored priesthood and temples are part of the “marvellous work” Isaiah saw.

Before class

  1. Write “I cannot read a sealed book.” (Joseph Smith—History 1:65) on a card. Seal it in a folder or envelope with way too much tape and write SEALED across the front.
  2. On one scrap sheet, draw a line of strange symbols: loops, hooks, dots and zigzags. Write CERTIFICATE in big letters on the other.
  3. Write one pair on each slip: “Isaiah 29:4 + 2 Nephi 26:16” · “Isaiah 29:11 + Joseph Smith—History 1:65” · “Isaiah 29:12 + 2 Nephi 27:19–20” · “Isaiah 29:13 + Joseph Smith—History 1:19.”
  4. Text two strong readers before Sunday: one to be Isaiah (reads Isaiah 29:4 and 29:11–12) and one to be Martin Harris (reads Joseph Smith—History 1:65). Show Martin that Joseph Smith—History is near the end of the Pearl of Great Price.
  5. Add your kids’ names in the My Class tab and split them into two teams for the whole lesson: Team Rose (Isaiah 35:1) and Team Nail (Isaiah 22:23). Keep score with tally marks or the Goal Jar.

If your class is wild

  • Run the whole lesson like a detective agency. Every time a prophecy matches its fulfillment, the class stamps a fist on a palm and shouts “PROPHECY CONFIRMED!” Kids this age will wait for their cue if the cue is loud.
  • Give Professor Anthon to your most dramatic kid. Tearing up the certificate is a huge energy release, and the whole room will be watching.
  • The Five “I Wills” wiggle ends with everyone dropping to the floor. Say “Drop safely, no crashing into neighbors” before you start, and space kids an arm’s length apart.
  • Hand out jobs, not just turns: Keeper of the Case File, Scorekeeper, Sound Board Operator, Discussion Leader. A kid with a job doesn’t have time to cause trouble.
  • If one team runs away with the score, award a “humble detective” point to anyone who admits a wrong guess and fixes it. It fits the lesson perfectly.

1. Hook

Crack the Sealed Case File

An impossible challenge sets up the prophecy the whole lesson solves: a learned man who cannot read a sealed book.

  1. Hold up the taped folder. Say: “Inside this case file is a real sentence a famous professor said out loud in New York City in 1828. A prophet wrote it down about 2,500 years before he said it.”
  2. SAY“Your mission: read it. No opening, no tearing, no peeking under the tape. You have 45 seconds. Go!” Let teams hold it up to the light, shake it and guess.
  3. When time runs out, say: “Read this, I pray thee.” Let them answer: “We can’t, it’s sealed!” Say: “Isaiah 29:11 says a learned man would say almost exactly that. Today you’re going to watch it come true.”
  4. Hand the folder to the Keeper of the Case File. Say: “Do NOT open it until the story tells you to.”

The Human Sealed Book

  1. Pick two kids to be the Sealed Book. They stand facing each other with their palms pressed together like closed covers. Whisper the secret sentence to both: “I cannot read a sealed book.”
  2. SAY“Inside this book is a real sentence a famous professor said in New York City in 1828. A prophet wrote it down about 2,500 years before he said it. Your mission: read it, without opening it.”
  3. Teams take turns trying to talk the book open with their fanciest voice: “Read this, I pray thee!” Tap the knock sound on the Sound Board each time. The book stays shut and shakes its head.
  4. SAY“Isaiah 29:11 says a learned man would say almost exactly what you’re feeling. The Book opens only when the story tells it to.”

2. Story

Case File: The Book Nobody Could Read

Kids act out Isaiah’s prophecy and its fulfillment and watch the clues match one by one.

  1. Hand out roles (tap Roles in Teach Mode). Isaiah and Martin Harris go to your strongest readers. Everyone else is a Case Detective.
  2. Teach the signal: a fist stamped on a palm plus “PROPHECY CONFIRMED!” every time a clue comes true.
  3. Read each scene aloud and pause for the action cue. Readers read from real scriptures, not the screen.

Five “I Wills” and a Fall

A full-body countdown shows Lucifer’s pride in Isaiah 14 and why the proud professor missed the miracle.

  1. Space everyone an arm’s length apart and sit on the floor. Say: “Isaiah compared the proud king of Babylon to Lucifer, who wanted to rule in God’s place. Count the ‘I wills’!”
  2. Read Isaiah 14:13–14 slowly. At each “I will,” everyone rises one level: kneel, squat, stand, tiptoe, then tiptoe with arms stretched as high as they go. Everyone counts out loud: 1… 2… 3… 4… 5!
  3. Tap the whoosh sound and read Isaiah 14:15: “Yet thou shalt be brought down.” Everyone drops safely back to sitting.
  4. SAY“In the premortal council, Satan said, ‘Give me thine honor.’ Jesus said, ‘Father, thy will be done, and the glory be thine forever’ (Moses 4:1–2).” Everyone stands, points up, and bows their heads for three seconds. Say: “Pride says ME. Jesus says THEE.”

Prophecy Match: Isaiah 29:14

Kids memorize the key verse, then race through real scriptures to prove that Isaiah 29 came true.

  1. Teach Isaiah 29:14 with the motions. Say it twice together, the second time like a detective announcing the answer.
  2. SAY“Detectives don’t just believe a story; they check the evidence. Let’s match each clue in Isaiah 29 to where it came true.” Give each team scriptures.
  3. Read one slip at a time (short on time? race two slips and read the other two aloud). Both teams race to find BOTH verses. The first team to read both aloud and explain the match scores a point and shouts “PROPHECY CONFIRMED!”
  4. The Stayed-Mind Balance Challenge

A balance test shows what Isaiah 26:3 means by a mind “stayed” on the Lord.

  1. Everyone stands on one foot. Round 1: follow my hands with your eyes as I wave them all over the room. Count how long everyone lasts.
  2. Round 2: pick one spot on the wall that never moves and lock your eyes on it. The other team tries to distract you with silly faces and noises (no touching). Then switch teams. Most people balance much longer when their eyes stay fixed on one still spot.
  3. Read Isaiah 26:3. Say: “‘Stayed’ means fixed, propped up, held steady. The Lord promises perfect peace to the person whose mind is fixed on Him.”
  4. Ask: “What are the waving hands in your life, the things that make you wobble?” (Tests, friends fighting, scary news, screens.) “What helps you lock your mind on Jesus on a normal Tuesday?” (Prayer, the sacrament, a scripture, a hymn in your head.)

The Desert Blooms

A quiet ending ties the Restoration to Isaiah 35:1 and invites each kid to gain their own witness.

  1. Everyone cups their hands closed like a flower bud. Lower your voice and read Isaiah 35:1: “the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose.”
  2. SAY“After Jesus’s Apostles died, the world went a long time without His priesthood authority and many plain truths, like a dry desert. Then came the Restoration: the Book of Mormon, the priesthood, prophets, and temples. The desert started to bloom.” Kids slowly open their hands.
  3. Share a short testimony of the Book of Mormon: how you came to know it’s true, one line at a time. Invite anyone who wants to share one sentence: “I know…” or “I’m still learning, and I want to know.”
  4. SAY“Some of you will soon go to the temple for the first time. Temples are one of the flowers in that desert.” Introduce the challenge and ask a kid to pray.

  1. 🧔📜 Clue #1: a voice from the dust

    About 2,500 years before any of this happened, the Lord showed Isaiah a strange vision. A people who had been brought down would one day “speak out of the ground.” Their words would whisper “out of the dust.” How can a voice come out of the ground?

    🎬 Isaiah reads Isaiah 29:4 aloud. The Detectives cup their hands to their mouths and whisper, “Out of the dust…”

  2. 🔒📖 Clues #2 and #3: a sealed book

    Isaiah saw more. A book would be sealed. People would hand it to a learned man and say, “Read this.” He would say he couldn’t, because it was sealed. Then the book would go to someone who was not learned at all.

    🎬 Isaiah reads Isaiah 29:11–12 aloud. The Detectives write three clues in the air: SEALED BOOK · LEARNED MAN · NOT LEARNED.

  3. ⛰️📙 A record buried in a hill

    Fast-forward to about A.D. 421. Moroni, the last Nephite prophet, finished his people’s record on metal plates and buried it in a hill. It stayed hidden in the ground for about 1,400 years, waiting.

    🎬 Moroni kneels and pretends to bury the plates. The Detectives lower their voices and count slowly: “One hundred years… one thousand years… fourteen hundred years…”

  4. 👼👦 September 22, 1827: out of the ground!

    Moroni came back as an angel to a teenage farm boy named Joseph Smith. After four years of yearly visits, on September 22, 1827, Joseph finally received the plates. That was 199 years ago this very week! A people’s voice was about to speak out of the ground, just like Isaiah said.

    🎬 Moroni points. Joseph lifts the heavy plates out of the ground. Detectives stamp a fist on a palm: “PROPHECY CONFIRMED!”

  5. ✍️🐴 Martin carries the characters to New York

    Joseph copied some of the strange characters from the plates onto paper. His friend Martin Harris, a farmer, carried the paper all the way to New York City to show a famous, brilliant professor named Charles Anthon.

    🎬 Joseph hands Martin the paper of characters. Martin waves goodbye. Detectives: clip-clop on your knees!

  6. 🎓📄 The professor signs a certificate

    By Martin’s account, the professor studied the characters and said they were true characters. He even wrote a certificate saying so. Then he asked one more question: where did this writing come from?

    🎬 The Professor pushes up pretend glasses: “Hmm… VERY impressive.” He signs the certificate with a big flourish.

  7. 😤📄 “Angels? No such thing!”

    Martin said an angel of God had shown Joseph where the plates were. The professor asked for his certificate back and tore it to pieces! He said there was no such thing as angels anymore, and told Martin to bring him the plates so he could translate them himself.

    🎬 The Professor tears the certificate into tiny pieces. Detectives gasp: “Ohhhh no!”

  8. 🔒😲 “I cannot read a sealed book.”

    Martin told him part of the plates was sealed, and he wasn’t allowed to bring them. The brilliant professor answered with almost the exact words Isaiah wrote 2,500 years earlier.

    🎬 Martin reads Joseph Smith—History 1:65 aloud. The Keeper of the Case File rips it open and reads the card. Detectives: “PROPHECY CONFIRMED!”

  9. 👦🙏✨ A marvelous work and a wonder!

    The book went to someone “not learned,” just as Isaiah said. Joseph had very little schooling, but he translated by the gift and power of God while Emma and others wrote. Nephi recorded the Lord’s words: “I am able to do mine own work.” In 1830 the Book of Mormon was printed. Isaiah called it “a marvellous work and a wonder.”

    🎬 Joseph kneels, Emma writes, and everyone opens their hands like a book: “MARVELOUS!” Final stamp: “CASE CLOSED!”

Nephi’s Case Notes

Read 2 Nephi 27:6–26, Nephi’s longer version of Isaiah 29. Find two details Nephi includes that Isaiah 29 doesn’t (hint: look at verse 12). Tell your family what you found. Eleven-year-olds: make reading the Book of Mormon one of your Children and Youth goals.

This week in Primary we cracked the case of Isaiah 29: Isaiah wrote about a sealed book about 2,500 years early, and in 1828 Professor Charles Anthon told Martin Harris, “I cannot read a sealed book” (Joseph Smith—History 1:65). We also saw how Lucifer’s pride brought him down (Isaiah 14) and how the Lord gives perfect peace to those whose minds are stayed on Him (Isaiah 26:3). Ask your child: why do you think the Lord gave the Book of Mormon to a farm boy instead of a famous professor?

🔨 A Nail in a Sure Place · 4 min

  1. Stick a sticky note to the wall and try to hang a heavy coat or bag on it. It falls. Then hang it on a real hook, doorknob, or chair back.
  2. Read Isaiah 22:22–23: Eliakim receives the key of the house of David and is fastened “as a nail in a sure place.” Then read Revelation 3:7, where Jesus Christ is the one who has “the key of David.”
  3. Ask: “What are people tempted to hang their whole lives on that can’t hold the weight?” (Being popular, money, winning.) “Why is Jesus a sure place?”

🧱 Line upon Line Challenge · 4 min

  1. Read Isaiah 28:10. Say: “Let’s learn a verse the way God teaches: line upon line.”
  2. Teach Isaiah 26:3 one phrase at a time. Each round, add one more phrase and one more kid who says it alone, until someone can say the whole verse.
  3. Ask: “Why doesn’t God just download everything into our heads at once?” Talk about how a testimony grows the same way, a little here and a little there.

🏆 Swallowed Up in Victory · 3 min

  1. Read Isaiah 25:8: “He will swallow up death in victory.” Then read 1 Corinthians 15:54, where Paul quotes Isaiah about the Resurrection.
  2. Play one round of Tug of War on your phone or tablet: Team Death vs. Team Victory. Whoever wins the round, say together: “In the end, Victory wins!”
  3. Ask: “Because Jesus rose again, what happens to death? What does Isaiah say happens to our tears?”
