Know the chapters

Isaiah 40–49 is full of comfort. Isaiah wrote to Israelites who, long after his day, would be carried far from home to Babylon and would wonder if God had forgotten them (Isaiah 49:14). The Lord’s answer is tender: a mother might forget her nursing baby, “yet will I not forget thee,” and “I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands” (49:15–16). He calls His people by name (43:1), and He gathers the lambs in His arm like a shepherd (40:11). The Lord speaking in these chapters is Jehovah, who is Jesus Christ.

For three-year-olds, teach one tiny truth: Jesus will never forget me. Many Sunbeams are just learning to stay in class without Mom or Dad, and “Did they forget me?” is a real worry at this age. A mommy rocking her baby and a shepherd carrying a tired lamb are pictures they can feel. Say the key phrase over and over, with a hug every time, and use each child’s name as often as you can.

These chapters have more gentle pictures for other weeks or for the extras: the Lord pours water on thirsty ground (44:3), peace can flow like a river (48:18), and people who trust Him mount up with wings like eagles (40:31). Many Latter-day Saints also think of 49:16 when they remember that the risen Savior kept the marks in His hands (3 Nephi 11:14–15). For Sunbeams, simply say that Jesus keeps us close and always remembers us.

Grab any stuffed animal and a washable marker, and write the children’s names on your palm in the hallway. What to bring6 items

Before class

  1. Pick a cuddly toy to be Little Lamb and tuck it under the blanket in your bag.
  2. Right before class, write each child’s first name small on your palm with the washable marker. Keep that hand closed until the very end.
  3. Add your children’s names in the My Class tab so you can greet every child by name.
  4. Practice the key verse motions once in front of a mirror. It helps nerves!
  5. If you don’t know the tune of “I Feel My Savior’s Love,” play it once in the Gospel Library app.

If your class is wild

  • Tears at the door are normal for three-year-olds. Let a parent stay for the first few minutes, then hand the child a job: “Can you hold Little Lamb for me?” Busy hands calm big feelings.
  • Teach an attention signal in the first minute: you say “Little lambs…” and they answer “Baa!” and sit on their bottoms. Use it all lesson.
  • Potty breaks happen. Follow your ward’s policy (usually a parent or the second adult takes the child). The Church asks for two adults with children, so never leave the class alone or go off alone with one child.
  • Three-year-olds last 2–4 minutes per activity. If the room melts down, skip straight to the Little Lambs Hop, then come back.
  • If you bring a snack, check allergies with every parent and your ward’s policy first. Snack time right before the testimony helps wiggly bodies settle.

1. Hook

Peekaboo, Little Lamb!

Peekaboo is a three-year-old’s favorite game, and it quietly shows that someone who loves you remembers where you are.

  1. Before the children come in, hide Little Lamb under the blanket on your lap.
  2. SAY“Something soft is hiding under my blanket. Can you say ‘baa’ to help me find it?” Let everyone baa.
  3. Lift one corner slowly… then pull the blanket away: “Peekaboo! It’s Little Lamb!”
  4. Hide it again. Ask: “Did I forget Little Lamb? No! I remembered right where Lamb was!” Play two or three more times.
  5. SAY“Today we’ll learn that Jesus will never forget YOU.”
🌪️ If a child grabs for the lamb, give them a job: “You can lift the blanket next time if you sit on your spot.”

Peekaboo, Friends!

  1. Cover your eyes with your hands. Say: “Where’s Emma? Where did Emma go?”
  2. Open your hands wide: “Peekaboo! There you are!” Do it for each child by name. They will giggle every time.
  3. SAY“I didn’t forget you! I remembered every single name.”
  4. SAY“Today we’ll learn that Jesus will never forget YOU.”

2. Story

Picture Story: Jesus’s Little Lambs

Seven short picture scenes with an action in each let wiggly Sunbeams move while they hear that Jesus remembers them.

  1. Sit close together on the floor. Say: “Everyone is a little lamb today!”
  2. Swipe through the scenes on your phone or tablet. Read the one or two sentences, then do the action together.
  3. At scene 6, let children take turns holding Little Lamb while everyone rocks their arms.
  4. After every scene or two, say the key phrase together: “Jesus will never forget me!”
  5. If a child wanders off, call softly, “Little lamb, come home!” and wave them back to the group.

Little Lambs Hop

Three-year-olds need to move after sitting for a story, and lamb moves keep the picture of Jesus’s lambs alive.

  1. SAY“Little lambs, stand up!”
  2. Sing “Do As I’m Doing” (Children’s Songbook, 276) and lead lamb moves: hop, wiggle your tail, nibble grass, say “baa,” and lie down for a nap.
  3. End with the nap. Whisper: “Shhh… Jesus watches over His little lambs.” Wait three seconds.
  4. SAY“Wake up, little lambs!” and sit down together.

4. Scripture

Our Little Verse: Isaiah 49:15

A few words with big motions, repeated many times, is how three-year-olds carry a scripture home.

  1. Hold up your scriptures. Say: “This is the Bible. It has Heavenly Father’s and Jesus’s words in it. Listen!”
  2. Read Isaiah 49:15 slowly: “yet will I not forget thee.” Say: “That means Jesus will never forget you!”
  3. Teach the motions (see Key Verse) one at a time. Then say it all together: “Jesus will never forget me!”
  4. Say it three ways: a teeny lamb whisper, a regular voice, and a big happy voice.
  5. Go around the circle. Say each child’s name, and that child shouts “me!” with a big hug.

5. Game

Find Little Lamb

A gentle hide-and-seek shows that a good shepherd looks for every lamb and always remembers them.

  1. SAY“Oh no! Little Lamb wandered off! Cover your eyes!” Put Little Lamb somewhere easy to spot: on a chair, by the door, under the table.
  2. SAY“Open your eyes! Walking feet!” Baa louder when they get close and softer when they wander away.
  3. When someone finds Lamb, everyone cheers: “We found you! We didn’t forget you!”
  4. Let a different child hide it next (whisper a hiding spot to them). Play three or four rounds.
  5. SAY“A good shepherd looks for every lamb. Jesus always knows where you are, and He never forgets you.”
🌪️ Keep hiding spots in plain sight so nobody gets frustrated. Hold hands with your fastest runner and call them your helper shepherd.

Find the Lost Lamb

  1. SAY“Everyone cover your eyes!” Quietly lead one child to curl up like a sleepy lamb somewhere in the room where you can see them.
  2. SAY“Open your eyes! One of our lambs is lost! Listen…” The lost lamb gives a tiny “baa.”
  3. Everyone tiptoes to find the lamb. The finder takes the lamb’s hand and walks them home to the group. Cheer: “We found you! We didn’t forget you!”
  4. Give three or four children a turn to be the lost lamb.
  5. SAY“A good shepherd looks for every lamb. Jesus always knows where you are, and He never forgets you.”

  4. Share one simple sentence: “I know Jesus loves me, and I know He loves you.”
  5. Fold arms for the closing prayer. Whisper the words for the child who prays, a few at a time.

A Heart on My Hand

Each morning this week, ask Mom or Dad to draw a tiny heart on your hand. Every time you see it, give yourself a hug and say, “Jesus will never forget me!”

This week’s Sunbeam lesson (great for home, since Sunday is General Conference) teaches from Isaiah that Jesus will never forget your child. We played peekaboo with a little lamb, pretended to be lambs a kind shepherd carries close (Isaiah 40:11), and learned to say “Jesus will never forget me!” with a big hug. Ask your child: “Who will never forget you?” and hug them when they answer.

  1. SAY“Isaiah said keeping the commandments makes us feel calm like a river and strong like the waves” (Isaiah 48:18).
  2. River: sway your arms slowly side to side and whisper, “Shhh.”
  3. Waves: roll your arms in big waves and say, “Whoosh!” Switch back and forth a few times.
  4. Sing “Keep the Commandments” (Children’s Songbook, 146) while you sway.

  1. Before class, draw a simple lamb shape on a paper for each child and write the child’s name on it.
  2. Children glue cotton balls onto their lamb with a glue stick. Help little fingers, and watch that nothing goes in mouths.
  3. Point to each name: “Jesus knows your name. You are His little lamb!”

  1. SAY“Isaiah said the Lord makes us strong, like eagles flying high” (Isaiah 40:31).
  2. Crouch low like a baby eagle. Grow tall, spread your wings, and fly slowly around the room.
  3. Land in your spot and make big muscles: “Jesus makes me strong!”
