Know the chapters

This is the March fast-Sunday lesson from Appendix B of the 2027 manual, taught instead of the regular Come, Follow Me lesson. Its message: Heavenly Father speaks through prophets, they write His words in the scriptures, and studying the scriptures brings His power into our lives. Jesus loved the scriptures too. After He fasted forty days, He answered temptation with scripture: we live “by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). Sunbeams are too young to fast, but some parents are fasting today, so skip food rewards and use cheers and high-fives.

The story visits a few prophets in simple pictures: Moses on the mountain, where the Lord gave the commandments (Exodus 20); Samuel the Lamanite, who stood on a city wall and told the people Jesus would be born (Helaman 13:4; 14:2); and Joseph Smith, who prayed in the trees and saw Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ (Joseph Smith—History 1:17). Prophets wrote these words down so we would always have them. Today we have a living prophet who teaches us too.

The story ends with Mary Rollins, who loved the Book of Mormon so much that she read it nearly all night. Later in Missouri, when angry men scattered the pages of a book of the Lord’s revelations in the street, Mary and her sister Caroline gathered them up and hid in a cornfield until they were safe (see “Mary and Caroline Rollins” in Doctrine and Covenants Stories). For three-year-olds, keep the chase gentle and short: the pages were in trouble, the sisters scooped them up, and everyone was safe.

The tiny truth for Sunbeams: the scriptures are Heavenly Father’s words, and they’re a treasure. Three-year-olds show love for the scriptures with their hands and ears: holding them gently, turning pages carefully, and listening while someone reads. Let them hold your scriptures today.

Only have 5 minutes?

Hide your scriptures in a pillowcase and let the children guess the “treasure” by feeling it. Pull it out: “Heavenly Father’s words!” Swipe through the picture story, teach “Search the scriptures” with the looking-and-opening motions, and play Follow the Light with a flashlight (Psalm 119:105). End by passing your scriptures gently around the circle. Brought nothing? Tap “I brought nothing”: hide your scriptures behind your back with a drumroll, and use the glowing screen as your lamp.

What to bring5 items

Before class

  1. Put your scriptures in the box or pillowcase before class and set it where the children can see it.
  2. Cut out five or six paper hearts or stars for Follow the Light.
  3. Add your children’s names in the My Class tab so you can greet each one by name.
  4. Read the story scenes once. Practice scene 6 (the cornfield) in a quiet, exciting whisper, not a scary voice.

If your class is wild

  • Some Sunbeams cry when a parent leaves. Let the parent stay a few minutes, then invite the child to hold the treasure box during the hook.
  • Attention signal: you say “Scriptures!” and they answer “My treasure!” while hugging a pretend book, then sit on their spots.
  • When children hold your scriptures, sit close and keep one hand under the book. Praise gentle hands: “You hold Heavenly Father’s words so carefully!”
  • Potty breaks: follow your ward’s policy (usually a parent or the second adult takes the child). Two adults stay with the children, so never leave the class alone.
  • It’s fast Sunday: skip food rewards. A hungry, grumpy child often perks up with a job, like holding the flashlight.

1. Hook

The Treasure Box

A hidden treasure builds suspense, and the reveal teaches the tiny truth: the scriptures are a treasure from Heavenly Father.

  1. Hold up the box or pillowcase. Whisper: “I brought a treasure today. It’s the most special thing I own!”
  2. Let a few children feel the outside. Ask: “Is it soft? Is it heavy? What could it be?” Let them guess.
  3. Tap Sound Board for a drumroll and pull out your scriptures: “Heavenly Father’s words!”
  4. SAY“Prophets wrote down Heavenly Father’s words in this book. Today we’ll learn why it’s a treasure.”

  1. Hide your scriptures behind your back. Whisper: “I brought a treasure today. It’s the most special thing I own!”
  2. Give clues: “It has lots of pages. It tells about Jesus. Grown-ups read it at church.” Let them guess.

Eight short picture scenes show prophets sharing Heavenly Father’s words and a girl who treasured them.

  1. Sit close together on the floor. Say: “Let’s meet some people who loved Heavenly Father’s words!”
  2. Swipe through the scenes on your phone or tablet. Read the short sentences, then do the action together.
  3. Use an exciting whisper for scene 6. The girls were brave, and everyone was safe.
  4. After scenes 4 and 8, point to your scriptures and say together: “Heavenly Father’s words!”

A gentle Simon Says teaches Sunbeams to listen for the prophet and follow.

  1. SAY“Prophets tell us what Heavenly Father wants. Let’s listen and follow!”
  2. Give actions starting with “The prophet says…”: “touch your nose,” “jump three times,” “fold your arms,” “give a hug.” Everyone does it.
  3. Once in a while, give an action without “The prophet says.” Anyone who moves just laughs. No one is out!
  4. End with: “The prophet says… sit down and listen!”

4. Scripture

Our Little Verse: John 5:39

Looking-and-opening motions help Sunbeams remember that Jesus invited us to search the scriptures.

  1. Hold up your scriptures. Say: “Jesus loved the scriptures! He said something about them. Listen!”
  2. Read John 5:39 slowly: “Search the scriptures.” Say: “That means look in the scriptures to find Heavenly Father’s words.”
  3. Teach the motions (see Key Verse). Then say it together: “Search the scriptures.”
  4. Say it three ways: a whisper, a regular voice, and a big happy voice.
  5. Let each child gently turn one page of your scriptures while everyone says it one more time.

5. Game

Follow the Light

Following a flashlight to hidden treasure acts out Psalm 119:105: the scriptures are a light that shows us where to go.

  1. Before the game, lay the paper hearts or stars around the room while the children cover their eyes.
  2. SAY“The Bible says Heavenly Father’s words are a lamp for my feet.” Turn on the flashlight and shine it on the floor.
  3. Everyone walks slowly behind the light. When it lands on a heart, one child picks it up: “Treasure!”
  4. Each time, say: “The scriptures show me where to go!” Keep going until every child has found a treasure.
  5. Let a child hold the flashlight for the last round (with your hand on theirs).

Follow the Glowing device

  1. SAY“The Bible says Heavenly Father’s words are a lamp for my feet.” Hold up your phone or tablet and show the kid screen, bright and glowing.
  2. Walk slowly around the room holding the glowing phone or tablet low. Everyone follows on tiptoe.
  3. Stop at a chair, the door or a window and say: “Treasure!” Everyone pats the spot and says: “The scriptures show me where to go!”
  4. Let a child lead the next round (hold your phone or tablet with them). Play until everyone has found a treasure spot.

  3. Sing it once more, marching very slowly, and end sitting down.

Hold the Treasure

Holding real scriptures for a moment helps each child feel that Heavenly Father’s words are for them.

  1. Lower your voice. Say: “These are Heavenly Father’s words. They are a treasure.”
  2. Pass your scriptures gently around the circle (keep a hand under them). As each child holds them, say softly: “Emma, these are Heavenly Father’s words for you.”
  3. Share one simple sentence: “I love the scriptures. They help me know Jesus.”
  4. Fold arms for the closing prayer. Whisper the words for the child who prays, a few at a time.

Treasure Time

This week, sit with Mom or Dad and let them read you a few words from the scriptures. Hold the book gently, turn one page, and say, “My treasure!”

Text the parents

Today your Sunbeam learned that prophets write down Heavenly Father’s words, and the scriptures are a treasure. We heard about Moses, Samuel, Joseph Smith and a girl named Mary Rollins who loved the Book of Mormon, and we followed a flashlight to “treasure” (Psalm 119:105). Ask your child: “What is my treasure book?” Then let them hold your scriptures while you read one short verse together.

  1. SAY“Jesus loved the scriptures. After He fasted a long time, He was very hungry, and He said we need Heavenly Father’s words even more than bread” (Matthew 4:4).
  2. Everyone rubs their tummy: “Food for my body!” Then hugs a pretend book: “Words for my spirit!”
  3. Do it three times, faster each time.
