Know the chapters

Micah came from a small country town in Judah and prophesied at the same time as Isaiah, about 700 years before Jesus was born. Israel’s leaders were greedy and unfair, and many people went through the motions of worship without really loving God. Micah warned them, but he also looked ahead to happy promises. In the last days “the mountain of the house of the LORD” (a temple) would stand above the hills, people from many nations would come to learn God’s ways, and they would “beat their swords into plowshares” (Micah 4:1–3). Isaiah recorded almost the same prophecy (Isaiah 2:2–4).

For eight-year-olds, the star of the week is Micah 5:2. Micah named the exact town where the promised Ruler would be born: Bethlehem, a village so small it was “little among the thousands of Judah.” He also said this Ruler’s “goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting,” a hint that Jesus lived with Heavenly Father long before He was born. Seven hundred years later, when wise men asked King Herod where the new King was, Herod’s chief priests and scribes answered by reading Micah’s prophecy (Matthew 2:1–6). The Nativity was no accident. Heavenly Father planned it, told His prophets, and kept His word.

Micah 6:6–8 is the heart of the book and a perfect Christmas question. Micah asks what gift he should bring the Lord: young calves, thousands of rams, rivers of oil? The answer is “to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God.” The Lord “delighteth in mercy” and will “cast all their sins into the depths of the sea” (Micah 7:18–19). That is exactly what Jesus came to Bethlehem to do. When children are fair, kind and forgiving, and stay close to God in prayer, they give Him the gift He wants most, and they keep the promises they made at baptism.

The three shorter books each get a moment. Nahum foretold the fall of Nineveh, the city Jonah once preached to, which had turned back to cruelty; yet he wrote that “The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble” (Nahum 1:7). Habakkuk asked God hard questions, learned to wait for His timing (Habakkuk 2:3), and decided that even if the crops failed, “Yet I will rejoice in the LORD” (3:17–18). Zephaniah promised that the Lord “will joy over thee with singing” (Zephaniah 3:17). Heavenly Father is not a distant, grumpy judge. He is safe, patient and glad about His children.

Tape up the three town signs and roll up a paper “scroll” that says BETHLEHEM (no supplies? tap “I brought nothing”: kids become the signs and your scriptures become the scroll). Before class

  1. Make three big signs and tape one to each of three walls: JERUSALEM 🏰 (the capital city, with the king’s palace), ROME 🏛️ (the biggest, most powerful city in the world), and BETHLEHEM 🏘️ (a tiny village of shepherds and farmers).
  2. Write “BETHLEHEM (Micah 5:2)” on a sheet of paper, roll it up and tie it. This is Micah’s scroll for the hook, and the Scribe reads it again in the drama.
  3. Test the floating drawing at home: draw a small sad face on a smooth plate with a fresh dry-erase marker, wait 10 seconds, then slowly pour a little water at the edge of the plate. The drawing should lift off and float. Swirl the water and it breaks apart. (If your marker won’t lift, use the backup: write “oops” on a square of toilet paper, drop it in a cup of water, and stir until it falls apart.)
  4. Wrap the present: put a Nativity picture or a note that says “The best gift for Jesus is YOU following Him!” in the center and wrap it in 7 layers. Tuck one challenge card under each layer.
  5. Challenge cards: ⚖️ You find $5 on the playground. What’s the fair thing to do? · 💗 Your little brother knocks over your LEGO tower.   6. Mark a Stronghold in one corner with masking tape or a blanket, big enough for the whole class to squeeze into.
  7. Add your kids’ names in the My Class tab so you can hand out story parts with one tap.

If your class is wild

  • Give King Herod to your loudest, most dramatic kid. Grumbling “Another king?!” is the perfect place to put all that volume.
  • Make the flashlight your attention signal for the whole lesson: when the Star turns off, everyone freezes like a statue.
  • For the town vote, everyone tiptoes like shepherds sneaking past sleeping sheep. Anyone who runs goes back to “Nazareth” (their seat) and starts over.
  • Unwrap Micah 6:8 rule: hand the present to the next person, never toss it. When the music stops, only the person holding it moves.
  • If they arrive bouncing, play Stronghold! first and do the town vote right after.

Where Will the King Be Born?

A walk-and-vote mystery gets them moving and wondering from the very first minute.

  1. Point out the three signs on the walls. Say: “The greatest King who ever lived is about to be born. Where should He be born? Jerusalem, with the king’s palace? Rome, the biggest city in the world? Or Bethlehem, a tiny village of shepherds?”
  2. Everyone tiptoes to the sign they pick. Ask one kid at each sign: “Why did you choose that one?”
  3. Hold up the tied scroll. Say: “A prophet named Micah wrote the answer 700 years before it happened. Let’s see who guessed right!”
  4. Let a kid who is standing quietly untie the scroll and read it: BETHLEHEM!
  5. SAY“Heavenly Father chose the little town, and He told His prophet ahead of time, because He always keeps His promises.”

Nahum 1:7 turns into a hurry-to-safety game that burns off energy.

  1. SAY“The prophet Nahum said the Lord is ‘a strong hold in the day of trouble.’ A stronghold is like a castle with thick walls where you’re safe.”
  2. Everyone wanders around the room like sheep in a field.
  3. Open the Sound Board and tap a trouble sound: thunder (a storm!), roar (a lion!), crash (something broke!). Everyone speed-walks into the Stronghold and makes castle walls with their arms.
  4. Once they’re in, everyone says together: “The Lord is good!” Then back out for the next round.
  5. Play 3–4 rounds. Ask: “When could you ask Heavenly Father for help this week?”

The Oops That Floated Away

A surprising science trick shows how Jesus lifts our sins away when we repent.

  1. Set the plate where everyone can see. Say: “Everyone makes mistakes. Let’s pretend this little face is a mistake someone made today.”
  2. Draw a small sad face on the plate with the dry-erase marker. Ask: “Can you just rub away a mistake by yourself, like hurting someone’s feelings?”
  3. Read Micah 7:18–19: the Lord “delighteth in mercy” and will “cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.”
  4. Have a helper slowly pour a little water at the edge of the plate. Watch the face lift up and float! Gently swirl the water and let it break apart.
  5. SAY“When we repent, Jesus doesn’t just scrub at our mistakes. He lifts them away, like throwing them to the bottom of the ocean. That’s what He came to Bethlehem to do.”
  6. Ask: “Micah said to love mercy too. Who could you forgive this week, the way Jesus forgives you?”

Cast It Into the Sea

  1. Point to one corner of the room. Say: “That corner is the deepest ocean in the world.” Tap waves on the Sound Board.
  2. SAY“Everyone makes mistakes.” Name a few: grabbing a toy, saying something mean, not listening. For each one, kids pick up a big, heavy, invisible rock and hug it. Soon they’re staggering and groaning.
  3. Ask: “Can you just brush a mistake off by yourself, like hurting someone’s feelings?” Let them try to shake the rocks off. They’re still stuck!
  4. Read Micah 7:18–19: the Lord “delighteth in mercy” and will “cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.”
  5. Count down: “3, 2, 1, THROW!” Everyone heaves their rocks toward the ocean corner. Tap splash! Everyone stands up tall and light.

  3. When it buzzes, whoever is holding it unwraps ONE layer, reads the card (or you read it), and does the challenge.

    About 700 years before Jesus was born, the Lord showed the prophet Micah a secret. The promised King would not be born in a big, fancy city. He would come from Bethlehem, a town so little that hardly anyone noticed it. Micah wrote it down so everyone would know when it happened.

    🎬 Micah writes on the scroll, then shouts, “Bethlehem!” Crew: “Bethle-WHO?”

  2. ⏳👵 Waiting… and waiting… and waiting

    People copied Micah’s words onto scrolls and kept them safe. Children grew up and became grandparents, and then their grandchildren grew up too. For 700 years, God’s people waited for the promised King.

    🎬 Crew ticks like clocks, “Tick… tock… tick… tock…” and passes a pretend scroll down the row.

  3. 👩🧔‍♂️🚶 A long trip to Bethlehem

    Mary and Joseph lived far away in Nazareth. But the Roman emperor ordered everyone to go to their family’s hometown to be counted. Joseph came from King David’s family, so they traveled all the way to Bethlehem, the city of David. Even an emperor’s rule helped Micah’s promise come true!

    🎬 Mary and Joseph walk slowly around the room. Crew stomps softly: “Step… step… step…”

  4. 🌟👶 Jesus is born in Bethlehem!

    When they got to Bethlehem, there was no room for them in the inn. Baby Jesus was born and laid in a manger, a feeding box for animals. The Savior of the world came to the little town, exactly as Micah said.

    🎬 Mary rocks the baby. Crew baas softly like sleepy sheep, then whispers, “Bethlehem!”

  5. 🔭⭐ A new star in the East

    Far away in the East, wise men saw a brand-new star. They knew it meant a great King had been born. They packed precious gifts and set out on a long, long journey to find Him.

    🎬 The Star holds the light high. Wise Men point and gasp, “Look!” then start walking.

  6. 🏰👑 Knock, knock, King Herod!

    The wise men went to Jerusalem, the big city, and asked, “Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east.” King Herod was troubled. He did not want anyone else to be king!

    🎬 Wise Men knock three times. Herod stomps his foot: “Another king?! Hmph!”

  7. 📜🔍 “What did the prophet say?”

    Herod called in the chief priests and scribes, who knew the scriptures. They unrolled the old scroll and read Micah’s words. The answer had been written down 700 years before: Bethlehem!

    🎬 The Scribe unrolls the scroll and reads, “Bethlehem!” Everyone: “Micah was RIGHT!”

  8. ⭐🏠🎁 The star leads to Jesus

    The wise men followed the star until it stopped over the house where young Jesus was. They were filled with joy! They knelt down and gave Him gold, frankincense and myrrh, the best gifts they had.

    🎬 The Star leads the Wise Men to Mary. They kneel and hold out their gifts. Crew: “Ahhh!”

  9. 🎁❤️ What gift can I give Jesus?

    Micah asked a big question: what gift does the Lord really want? Thousands of sheep? Rivers of oil? No! He wants us to do what is right, to love being kind and forgiving, and to walk humbly with Him. That is a gift every kid can give.

Draw 7 stars on a piece of paper. Each day this week, give Jesus a secret gift from Micah 6:8: do something fair, forgive or help someone, or say a real, from-the-heart prayer. Color in a star for every gift.

Today in Primary we learned that the prophet Micah said the Savior would be born in little Bethlehem, about 700 years before it happened (Micah 5:2), and we acted out the wise men following the star. We also learned the gift the Lord wants most: “to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God” (Micah 6:8). Ask your child: what secret gift did you give Jesus today?

🗡️ Swords into Plowshares · 4 min

  1. Give each child a sheet of aluminum foil. Everyone squishes it into a little sword.
  2. Read Micah 4:3: “they shall beat their swords into plowshares.” A plowshare is the metal blade of a plow that digs rows for planting.
  3. Now everyone reshapes their sword into a plow, a shovel or a watering can.
  4. Ask: “Micah said when people learn the Lord’s ways, they stop fighting. How can you turn an argument into peace this week?”

🌳 Yet I Will Rejoice · 3 min

  1. Read Habakkuk 3:17–18. Even if the fig tree had no fruit and the fields had no food, Habakkuk said, “Yet I will rejoice in the LORD.”
  2. Read a “bad day,” and kids jump up, shout “Yet I will rejoice!” and name one blessing: it rains on your birthday · your tooth falls down the drain · your team loses · you have a cold on Christmas.

  2. Everyone holds a funny frozen pose for 20 seconds. Ask: “Is it hard to wait for Christmas?”
  3. SAY“God’s people waited 700 years for Jesus to be born in Bethlehem, and He came. God’s promises always come true, on His timing.”

⛰️ The Mountain of the Lord’s House · 3 min

  1. Make a “mountain” from a stack of books and set a picture of a temple on top.
  2. Read Micah 4:2: “Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways.”
  3. Kids take turns walking their fingers up the mountain and naming one reason they love the temple.
