Know the chapters

John 1 starts before Bethlehem, “in the beginning.” The Apostle John teaches that Jesus lived with Heavenly Father before He was born, and that under the Father’s direction He created the earth and everything on it (John 1:1–3). We lived with Heavenly Father too before we were born. John also calls Jesus the Light: His light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can’t overcome it (John 1:5, 9).

Then John the Baptist, the baby from week 1, now grown up, sees Jesus and says, “Behold the Lamb of God!” (John 1:29, 36). Two of John’s followers start following Jesus, and He invites them, “Come and see” (John 1:39). One of them, Andrew, runs to find his brother Simon and brings him to Jesus. Jesus gives Simon a new name, Cephas, which means a stone (we know him as Peter). Jesus says to Philip, “Follow me,” and Philip goes to find his friend Nathanael. Nathanael isn’t sure, so Philip just says, “Come and see.” Jesus already knew Nathanael and had seen him under a fig tree, and Nathanael says Jesus is the Son of God.

For 4- to 7-year-olds, keep two pictures: Jesus is like a light in the dark, and inviting is as easy as saying, “Come and see!” Little ones already invite friends to see a new puppy or a cool rock. They can invite friends and family to Primary, to family home evening or to hear a story about Jesus. Andrew and Philip didn’t give speeches. They just brought a friend.

Your 7-year-olds are getting ready for baptism. When they are baptized, they will promise to stand as witnesses of God (Mosiah 18:9), and a friendly “come and see” is one way to keep that promise. Also point out Nathanael’s surprise: Jesus knew him before they ever met. Jesus knows each child in your class by name.

Only have 5 minutes?

Read John 1:1–5 and 35–49. Turn off the lights and shine a flashlight to show that the dark can’t beat the light, then run the Story Drama on your phone or tablet. Teach “Come and see” with motions, play Mystery Picture and Forehead Guess, and end by practicing a real invitation. Brought nothing? Tap “I brought nothing” and play Light Tag instead.

What to bring3 items

Before class

  1. Check where the light switch is, and make sure the flashlight works.
  2. Pick a corner of the room to be the “Jesus corner.” Set the picture of Jesus there (or your phone or tablet showing a scene). Kids will “come and see” there during the story.
  3. Clear a path across the room so the story’s friends can walk and run to bring each other.
  4. Add your kids’ names in the My Class tab so roles and the spinner are one tap away.

If your class is wild

  • Lights off can make wiggly kids squeal. Say before you do it: “When the lights go off, we freeze and whisper.” Keep it to a few seconds.
  • The story ends with every child linked in one long chain. It’s a wiggle and a picture of the lesson at the same time.
  • Jesus’s words are read by you. The kids walk to the Jesus corner; no child plays Jesus.
  • Give readers the captions and the “Come and see!” lines. Little ones love being the Fig Tree and the Creation Crew.

1. Hook

Flashlight Surprise

3 min

A flashlight in a dark room shows that Jesus’s light is stronger than any darkness.

  1. SAY“When the lights go off, freeze and whisper.” Turn off the lights (or close the blinds).
  2. Whisper: “It’s dark. Can you see your friends? Can you find the door?”
  3. Click on the flashlight. Ask: “What happened to the dark?” (It went away!) Try to “push” the dark back over the light with your hand. It can’t!
  4. Lights on. Say: “The Bible says Jesus is the Light. His light shines in the dark, and the dark can never put it out.”
  5. Let a 6- or 7-year-old shine the light on the Jesus corner. Say: “Today we’ll meet some people who found that Light.”
🌪️ Keep the lights off for only a few seconds. If anyone is scared of the dark, let them hold the flashlight.

Light Tag

  1. Everyone crouches low with eyes covered. Say: “You are all in the dark.”
  2. Tap one child: “You are the Light!” They stand up tall with hands open wide like rays of light.
  3. The Light gently taps a friend’s shoulder, and that friend stands up and becomes a Light too. Keep going until everyone is standing.
  4. Ask: “Did the dark win?” (No!) Say: “The Bible says Jesus is the Light. His light shines in the dark, and the dark can never put it out. Today we’ll meet some people who found that Light.”

2. Story

Story Drama: We Found Jesus!

Walking to the Jesus corner and bringing friends shows kids how easy it is to invite someone to come and see.

  1. Hand out the roles (tap Roles in Teach Mode). Everyone else is the Creation Crew.
  2. Point out the Jesus corner. Say: “When I read Jesus’s words, people in the story come to this corner.” No child plays Jesus.
  3. Read each scene and pause for the action. Let readers read the big captions.
  4. In scenes 6 and 7, have the class shout the invitation: “Come and see!”
  5. At the last scene, everyone links arms in one long chain.

3. Wiggle break

Make the World!

Acting out creation gets wiggles out and teaches that Jesus made the earth under Heavenly Father’s direction.

  1. SAY“Jesus made the world for us! When I call something, make it with your body.”
  2. “Sun!” (big circle arms) · “Mountains!” (pointy arms up high) · “Ocean!” (wave arms) · “Fish!” (fish lips, swim) · “Birds!” (flap) · “Elephants!” (swinging trunk arm) · “Bunnies!” (hop).
  3. Let a few kids call out animals too.
  4. End with: “People!” Everyone stands tall and smiles. Say: “And He made the world for you!”
🌪️ Elephants and bunnies stay on their own spot. If it gets wild, call “Night!” and everyone lies down asleep for three seconds.

4. Scripture

Come and See: John 1:39

3 min

Three words with motions give kids an invitation they can use this week.

  1. Show the verse. Ask a reader to read it. Everyone echoes.
  2. Teach the motions. Say it three times, each time a little bigger.
  3. Practice inviting: pair each little one with an older buddy. The buddy says, “Come and see Primary with me!” and the little one waves them in.
  4. SAY“Jesus invited, and His friends invited their friends. You can say ‘come and see’ too!”

A hidden picture slowly revealed makes kids want to “come and see,” just like Nathanael.

  2. Ask a quick review question about the story. Each right answer removes a tile.
  3. Questions to use: Who ran to get his brother? What tree was Nathanael under? What did Jesus say to the two followers? What did Jesus make?

    Heavenly Father asked Jesus to make the earth. And He did! Jesus made the sun, the water, the fish, the birds, the mountains, everything.

    John wrote that Jesus is the Light. His light shines in the dark, and the dark can never put it out. When we follow Jesus, it’s like having a light that shows us the way.

  4. 🐑👉 “Look! The Lamb of God!”

    Now Jesus was grown up. John the Baptist was teaching by a river. When he saw Jesus walking by, he pointed and said, “Behold the Lamb of God!” That meant, “Look! There is the Savior!”

    🎬 John points to the Jesus corner. Everyone points and says, “Look!”

  5. 🚶🚶 “Come and see!”

    Two of John’s followers started following Jesus. Jesus turned around and asked what they were looking for. They asked where He was staying. The teacher reads Jesus’s words: “Come and see.” They went with Him and stayed with Him that day!

    🎬 Andrew and one friend walk to the Jesus corner and sit down happily.

  6. 🏃👦 Andrew runs to get his brother

    Andrew was so excited! The first thing he did was find his brother Simon. He said, “We have found the Messias!” That means the Savior. He brought Simon to Jesus, and Jesus gave Simon a new name that means “a stone.” We call him Peter.

    🎬 Andrew runs in place, grabs Simon’s hand and brings him to the Jesus corner. Simon stands strong like a rock.

  7. 🌳🤔 Philip finds Nathanael under a tree

    The next day Jesus found Philip. The teacher reads Jesus’s words: “Follow me.” Philip followed Jesus. Then Philip went to find his friend Nathanael, who was sitting under a fig tree. Nathanael wasn’t sure about Jesus. Philip didn’t argue. He just said, “Come and see.”

    🎬 The Fig Tree spreads its branches. Philip waves to Nathanael: “Come and see!” Nathanael scratches his head, then gets up.

  8. 👀💛 Jesus already knew Nathanael!

    When Nathanael came, Jesus told him that He had seen him under the fig tree, even before Philip called him. Nathanael was amazed! He said, “Thou art the Son of God.” Jesus knew Nathanael, and Jesus knows you too.

    🎬 Nathanael’s mouth drops open in surprise. Everyone points to themselves and whispers, “Jesus knows me!”

  9. 🔗🌍 Friends bring friends to Jesus

    One friend brought another, and that friend brought another. Today people all over the world follow Jesus. It started with an invitation: “Come and see!”

Come and See Challenge

This week, invite one person to come and see something about Jesus: Primary, family home evening, a favorite scripture story or a picture of Jesus. Then tell your family how it went.

Today in Primary we learned from John 1 that Jesus made the world and is the Light that the dark can’t beat. We acted out how Andrew ran to get his brother and Philip told Nathanael, “Come and see” (John 1:39). Ask your child: who did Andrew bring to Jesus, and who could they invite to come and see?

  1. One child hides under a table (the fig tree) while everyone else covers their eyes.
  2. The class guesses who is missing.
